  • Must have completed required eLearning course

Course Overview:

The VITEK® 2 Advanced Expert System™ class is a 3 day course designed to train your laboratory technologist to review and release susceptibility results incorporating the use of the VITEK 2 Advanced Expert System (AES) software. An eLearning course is provided as foundational knowledge on antimicrobial classification and modes of action. Building on the eLearning course, we will explore the more important bacterial resistance mechanisms and their impact on susceptibility results. Considerable time will be spent reviewing results and learning how to customize the software to improve identification and susceptibility reporting. This will include the Advanced Reporting Tool (bioART) software. A comprehensive agenda is available under the Course Scheduling Resources section of this page.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recalling antibiotic classification and modes of action
  2. Explaining natural resistance (Wild Type) versus acquired resistance
  3. Understanding the process AES uses to recognize phenotypes
  4. Providing guidance for handling Green, Yellow, Red, and Purple AES Findings
  5. Explaining MIC (Biological) corrections and Therapeutic corrections
  6. Adding, modifying, and deleting MIC breakpoints
  7. Creating Advanced Reporting Tool (bioART) rules
  8. Answering and explaining common questions about AES and VITEK 2 reports
