Instructor Led Training

Class Schedule:

  • May 9 - 11, 2017

Class Location:

bioMérieux Learning and Development Center in Durham, NC

This course is set up on a Train-the-Trainer model and employs a blended learning approach consisting of web based online pre-work and instructor led training. This course is designed to train your laboratory’s microbiologist responsible for reviewing and releasing susceptibility reports in your laboratory in the operation of the VITEK® 2 Advanced Expert System™ (AES) software.

The class begins with some review exercises related to the assigned pre-work – antimicrobial classification and modes of action. Next, building on the pre-work, is an exploration of some of the more important bacterial resistance mechanisms and their impact on susceptibility results. This information serves as background for an in-depth discussion of the Advanced Expert System™ decision process and its role in validating test results.

Considerable time will be spent reviewing results and learning how to customize the software to improve identification and susceptibility reporting. This will include the Advanced Reporting Tool (bioART) software.

Upon completion of the course, participants will have gained the necessary knowledge and skills to go back to their labs, integrate the VITEK® 2 Advanced Expert System™ software, and train additional users in the key operation of the instrument.

In order to attend this class, all participants must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Instrument must be installed and used to report patient results for at least 3-6 months
  • Must have completed required online pre-work (see Pre-Training Materials above)

Course Objectives:

  • Classify antibiotics and describe their modes of action
  • Explain natural and acquired resistance
  • Describe common mechanisms of resistance and their impact on susceptibility results
  • Describe the analysis steps used by Advanced Expert System™ to validate identification and susceptibility results
  • Configure the software applicable to Advanced Expert System™
  • Analyze reports and resolve questions about results
  • Discuss workflow options that increase efficiency and support rapid reporting
  • Use the Advanced Expert System™ software as a troubleshooting tool in the lab
